Understanding Percentages
A percentage is a way to express a number as a fraction of 100. It is often denoted using the percent sign, "%". For example, 45% represents 45 out of 100, or 45/100, which equals 0.45 when converted to a decimal.
Basic Percentage Calculation
The basic percentage formula allows you to find what percentage one number is of another:
For example, if you scored 80 points out of a possible 100 on a test, your percentage score would be: (80 ÷ 100) × 100 = 80%
Percentage Change Calculation
Percentage change measures how much a value has increased or decreased relative to its original value:
If a product's price increased from $100 to $125, the percentage increase would be: ((125 - 100) ÷ 100) × 100 = 25%
Finding a Percentage of a Number
To find a percentage of a given number, convert the percentage to a decimal and multiply:
To find 15% of 200: (15 ÷ 100) × 200 = 0.15 × 200 = 30
